The system was authorized by post-Sept. 11 laws, including the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Reform Act of 2002, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001, and the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. People expect to be checked when they enter the country and for the government to determine if they’re admissible or not, but what they don’t expect is for the government to keep a record for 15 years of their comin into the country.
This database collections will be visible only to select government officials. Since June all travelers crossing land borders will need to present a machine readable document, such as a passport or a driver’s license with a radio frequency identification chip. The data could be used beyond determining whether a person may enter the United States.
All information may be shared with foreign agencies when relevant to their hiring or contracting decisions. Track everyone you never know!,the system collect: officials record name, birth date, gender, date and time of crossing, and a photo, where available, for U.S. travelers returning to the country by land, sea or air. The same information is gathered about foreign travelers, but it is held for 75 years. The information system will link to a new database, the non “Federal Entity Data System”, which is being set up to hold personal information about all drivers in a state’s database.
States that do not agree to allow customs to have such large amounts of information may allow the agency to query their databases in real time for information on a traveler.Disclosure of the database is among a series of notices, officials say, to make DHS’s data gathering more transparent.Of course, people will say that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about, but it’s hard not to worry about a 15 year record of your international comings and goings, complete with other personal data required for travel, being reviewed by an investigator for some purposes and eithermisinterpreted or shared with third parties.

Notebooks have emerged as a bare essential for the business executives who carry their work along with themselves. Notebooks which are also known as laptops can facilitate the work process thereby saving substantial and valuable time. In short, it is used as tool of time management.
Owning a notebook is a dream of many, but since it is very expensive nobody buys it unless it is indispensable to them. However, some people having shoe-string budget look for a good notebook. They are the ones who need detailed and comprehensive information on notebooks and laptops before they settle for one.
Basically, buying a notebook or laptop largely depends upon the personal choice, specific requirement and social status of a person. Besides, different manufacturers are introducing notebooks of different look with a wide-range of features. However, some notebooks are launched in the market to cater to a particular segment of buyers keeping in mind of their specific needs. Accordingly, these laptops differ in flavor, class and quality.
Let`s take a look at the various types of notebooks that are available in the market today. Keeping various factors in consideration the notebooks can be broadly divided into four major categories, such as:
Budget laptops – Typically, these laptops cost around US$ 1000 to $ 1200.
Mid-range laptops – Notebooks of this category can be found with a price-tag of about US$1200 to $1600.
Ultra-portable laptops – These light-weight laptops ranges from US$1600 to $2200.
Laptops for the people with a class apart. With all the standard and advanced features in these notebooks, they cost above US$2200.
Performance test of laptops:
Notebooks can be tested on the basis of certain benchmarks such as Multimedia content creation 2003 and Business Winston 2002. These tests determine the performance ability of different notebooks with regard to regular productivity applications and multimedia content application.
Similarly, 3D Mark05 and 3D Mark06 are used as standards to measure the gaming and graphic potential of different notebooks.
Likewise, PC Mark05 is taken as a yardstick to test various components of notebooks such as hard-disk general usage, multithreading, web-page rendering, file decryption and 3D pixel shader.
Moreover, the battery back-up and wireless connectivity can be tested using Battery Mark02 and QCheck as the benchmark.
Finally, Vista Compatibility Check can be undertaken to test if the notebooks have Vista-readiness. Under this test, the performance of the laptops is assessed on the basis of Vista drivers and Vista upgradeability.
Features:
When it comes to features, the list seems endless. Some expensive notebooks have the most advanced features such as built-in webcams, fingerprint readers, TPM and so on. So far as the features go, they can be divided into five different categories, such as:
Physical – Screen size and weight of the notebook
Connectivity – Bluetooth version 1/2, infrared, MMC reader, S-Video, DVI port, FireWire. The number and type of USB ports and PCMCIA slots.
Components – Type of optical drives, whether the notebook has a DVD combo, a CD-RW or a multi-recorder DVD-RW. The hard-drive capacity and any additional component such as wireless optical mouse or an MMC adapter.
Software – Software have always been an essential part of the package. These include recovery CDs, driver CDs, OSes, etc.
Protection – All types of protection available in a notebook, be it a finger-print reader, BIOS level HDD protection, touch-pad lock, TPM, or even rescue option available at the time of boot up.
Pricing and Warranty:
All notebooks ranging from $1200 to $4500 offer warranty of 1 year and some laptops have the option of additional extendable warranty.
So, the above discussed comprehensive analysis and performance tests will definitely help those planning to buy a laptop.

No one likes to get their computer fixed. It’s a big headache carting that heavy thing into a repair shop and waiting days or even weeks to get it back. It’s an overall painful experience, so I’ve done what I can and compiled this little list of things everyone should do before calling in the techs just to make the whole ordeal as painless as it can possibly be.
1. Restart your computer.
You may think this is a little silly, but there are a lot of people out there who never EVER turn off their computers. I know because my dear mother is one of them. It just doesn’t occur to them. You wouldn’t leave your car on overnight idling would you? So why do the same to your computer? Many times problems can go away simply by restarting your computer so the system can un-gum all its pathways and start fresh.
2. Make sure your computer is on.
This might seem like a joke, but I’ve known enough tech support personnel to learn that it isn’t, often monitors can get unplugged randomly so it’s always a good idea to make sure everything is connected.
3. Make sure EVERYTHING is connected.
Your computer has wires. Lots of wires. Power wires, internet cables, USB plugs, mouse and keyboard connections… and quite often more. It’s so easy to nudge something and a connection to come loose. Make sure everything is where it should be and in the right plug, and you’ll avoid lots of headaches. My other articles will go into a little more depth on what to do for more specific problems.
4. Check for manufacturer’s warranty because repairs are often covered.
Especially if you’ve bought your computer within the last 6 months to a year, repair will be covered on your warranty for unexpected glitches. Then it’s just a matter of putting it into a box and letting FedEx take care of the rest, because good manufacturers will take care of all those costs too.
5. Backup your data if you can.
These days more and more people are storing very sensitive information on their computers. Even at a repair shop, things can go wrong and your information can be lost. It is an EXTREMELY good idea to backup your important files whether by burning them to CD or DVD, or transferring them to an external memory drive. External Hard Drives are excellent for this, and they’re getting cheaper all the time. They plug into a USB port, and you can store all your information on these so if your computer goes out you won’t have to worry about anything going wrong and losing your information.
6. Delete anything you wouldn’t want someone else to see
This is similar to point number 6. Don’t blindly trust strangers with your information. If you have anything on your computer that anyone could use against you, make sure it isn’t there when you take it in by backing it up somewhere else and deleting it from your computer until it’s fixed.
7. Organize any system info you have, papers ect.
When you first buy your computer it comes with a lot of things. Warranty papers, system info, driver CD’s, stickers with model numbers ect. If you can have all of this stuff handy when you take it to your repair guy, it will make your life, and his, a LOT easier, and the time he doesn’t spend figuring out that information without the papers, is money that’s not coming out of your pocket.
8. Check this website!
There are lots of useful tidbits in the articles on our site (see resource box), and more are being added as they’re thought of. If it can solve even a tiny problem for you, then your life is that much easier and I can be content with the knowledge that I’ve made someone’s life a little bit better.
9. If you know of anyone more tech-savvy then you, ask them about it.
Now I’m going to put an asterisk on this one. If you have a friend who knows what they’re doing, let them take a look at it and they might be able to help you. However, you should not let them take apart and do any real fiddling unless you know they really do know their stuff. As in they’ve taken courses on computer repair or are actually techs themselves. There are so many times a simple problem was made worse because a friend took a look and “fixed” the problem. It’s a balance between saving on labor and potential for more damage. Even repair shops can break computers. The difference is, the shops have to reimburse you.
10. Check around.
Not all repair shops are created equal. Do your research, otherwise you may be stuck with a shoddy hack job while paying through the nose for it. Think of them like mechanics for computers. Some of them are good and honest, and some of them will do whatever they can to get more dollars out of you. I go into more detail about this here.
Well there you have it. These 10 simple rules have saved many people I know very little money and much stress, so I hope to put this, they can help more. Tell your friends can only thank him for that. =)

Storage Central – Model SC101 £68 (£79.98 inc VAT) is a hard disk enclosure with built-in disc controllers and networking features. This device emulates one or more logical drives using one or two physical IDE or PATA hard disks and provides a shareable storage facility accessible by all windows computers on a DHCP enabled network.
A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a collection of storage devices linked to the local area network which are accessed and administered as one central pool, such storage does not require a specific computer to be running for file sharing.
The device is attached to the network switch or router and acts like a file server for all the windows computers. However, unlike most other network storage devices, this one requires a client to be installed on each computer in the network.
The basic unit is supplied with 0, 1 or 2 drives c£68+VAT for the empty box and £92+VAT to include an 80gig hard drive – the storage can be bought separately, or you can add your own existing hard drives to the ‘empty’ box.
Product Description:
This unit provides both Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) level 0 & 1 and can be expanded indefinitely. SmartSync Pro advanced backup software is included which creates real-time copies of stored data from the clients .
This product is well suited for sharing and back up with the simplicity of using a local drive. Easy to set-up and install, connect to any wired or wireless router (54G Wireless Ethernet Adapter) or switch.
This is very basic storage area network type implementation but it is not a network attached storage device, so each computer on the network must have its own client software installed. There is no ability to connect to the device, using its native file share method and there is no platform-independent file-sharing support. (As opposed to the standard situation where a NAS device will offer a shared file system that can be mounted in the OS’s native method.)
You MUST use the included software. Although the device is capable of listening on port 80, there is no web interface to configure it. The included software, running on Windows is the only way.
Data transfer (read or write) about around 3MB/s. (this should be more like 10MB/s. This unit only supports simple security, ie a single password for each “logical drive” configured during set-up, probably because this is designed for the home market.
Good stuff:
1) Supports spanning and mirroring capabilities.
2) Discrete device eliminating the need for an additional computer/server.
3) Can support unlimited storage within the physical limitation of the two drive bays.
4) Once the interface drivers are installed, all Windows applications are able to utilise the attached drives as ‘local’ drive letters.
5) Easy to install and set up assuming a simple home network.
6) Supports block-level data transfers and fast response time being slightly better than USB 2.0 or fire wire external hard drives.
7) Inexpensive compared to similar products. Pre-configured network-attached storage (NAS) devices range from £200 to £1,500.
Bad stuff:
Hardware Issues:
1a) No peer-to-peer network connectivity (UPnP support).
1b) Drivers are only compatible with Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 200x.
2) It only supports IDE ATA 6 or 7. Most new drives on the market meet this requirement but older drives will likely not.
3) This system uses a partition format unrecognized by Windows, So these hard disks can not be disconnected and put into another computer without being reformatted.
4) This device allows password protection of each individual logical drive but does not support NTFS level security, there are no folders restricted to specific machines.
5) The disks are passively cooled and the device can get extremely hot when in use. Whilst this does not seem to adversely effect operation, using two fast hard drives could lead to premature failures.
6) No file level compression or associated security.
7) Each physical hard disk reacquires one IP address.
Software Issues:
1) No web based management utility, device setup can be done from any computer with the interface drivers but each computer’s drives must be configured individually.
2) The interface software is true 64 bit and is not compatible with windows 9x systems;
3) The configuration utility is simple to use but is very basic, I am using version 1.5.7.
4) Every time the utility loads, it asks the user if it should check for and install driver updates. This can be bypassed but you are informed that “the software upgrade contains valuable enhancements” regardless of if you are using the latest version or not.
5) The update process takes an unpredictable time (there is indication of activity but not of total progress or time required) and is not automated; download and update are not integrated and requires answers to questions that are implied.
6) When the device firmware if updated, the drivers and utility software on all the computer must be upgraded and sometimes the drives need to be reattached.
7) There is an online help system which explains the utility features, but does not include any instructions, user guide or how to information.
There are two configuration options, advanced and a set-up wizard, drives created with the advanced method can be attached by the wizard but these drives are ignored and can not be managed.
9) No audio streaming support.
Recommendations:
Buy: If you want an economical solution, which will work straight out of the box 98% of the time, and you have a typical home network with no complications, and none of your computers have spare drive bays you are happy to configure for your own backup drives.
Don’t buy: If any of the above don’t apply, or you want direct addressable storage from any part of your network, or you have critical data protection requirements, or your network is not currently configured using or can not use dynamic host configuration protocol (DCHP), or is using non standard private addressing range
This is not a prefect technical solution and is unsatiable for anything larger than a typical home or micro office environments. 6/10 for design and implementation, 9/10 for effort and usefulness.
Effectively: If you don’t know how or why your network works, this is probably perfect. If you do know what you are doing, you will almost certainly have tweaked something somewhere which will make this unusable or unnecessarily complicated to make work.

It is hard to imagine that anyone could fill up one of the huge hard drives that are included in most computers today, but considering that almost everything is in multimedia format these days, all that music, those photos and multiple videos can consume space pretty quickly. And if you work with graphics or any type of labor intensive software, then you may find yourself out of hard drive space sooner than you think.
When you are selecting a new hard drive for your computer, it is important to choose carefully to ensure that your hard drive works well and lasts longer. In this case, cheaper is definitely not better. When you are choosing a new hard drive, the most important factors are quality and reliability. In this way, you make certain that your hard drive does not experience any unnecessary mechanical failures or losses of data.
Of course, when you are running out of space on your current hard drive, one of the things that you will be comparing with different hard drives is the storage capacity. When you are considering how much space you need for your new hard drive, you need to think about how you actually use your computer and what types of files you actually store. Someone who just stores the minimum amount of information does not need a 1000 GB hard drive. However, if you are storing full length movies or doing some serious video editing, a hard drive with 500 GB or more of storage space is not out of the question. Keep in mind also that the newest hard drives with the latest technology are going to include more storage space than you will probably need. So weigh your options.
Hard drives transfer in one of two ways – either via an IDE or SATA connection. IDE hard drives are older and transfer data at the rates of 33, 66, 100, and 133 MB/s. If you have an older computer, then you may only be able to upgrade to the max in this range. The newer SATA hard drives transfer data at much higher speeds – 150 and 300 MB/s. Hard drive technology is always changing and evolving, so be sure to do your research beforehand.
What you pay for your new hard drive will depend on a number of factors – one of the biggest factors being storage capacity. Another factor that will affect how much your new hard drive costs is the rotation speed. Faster rotation speeds indicate how much more quickly your information will be found. You should look for a hard drive with at least 7200 RPM rotation speed.
With so much information to review, it can be pretty difficult to decide which hard drive upgrade is best for you. If you can afford it, a faster hard drive with a couple hundred gigabytes of space will probably be what you need and a bit more. Well known brands such as Seagate and Maxtor are definitely worth considering as these companies are known for producing top quality products that last.
Make a good choice when choosing your new hard drive will make sure you have enough space and can quickly access the information. You can also take comfort in knowing that you have selected a product that is expected to last some time to come.

A common piece of software that is often overlooked is the software driver. These drivers are designed to allow an external piece of hardware, such as a printer, to integrate with the main computer unit. A driver facilitates communication between the software application that needs to use a device and the device itself. It can be thought of as a bridge that closes the gap between applications and external hardware devices.
When a computer software program calls for a certain function of the device, this invokes a specific routine in the driver which then issues the proper command to the device. The device then sends the requested data back to the driver, which in turn communicates that back to the application.
These little drivers also have the ability to request certain commands or functions in return from the application that initiated the “call” to the device. With this constant back and forth communication, it is essential that a driver is running the most current available version of both the software application and of the driver itself.
Some of the common device drivers that you probably have on your pc are the small programs that came with your printer, your digital camera, your cell phone, any Bluetooth device that you have and hard drives that are removable. Without the right device driver you will find it virtually impossible for any of these external tools hardware devices to be recognized by the operating system, let alone function correctly.
When people have problems with printers, scanners, USB drives and other devices, one of the most common problems is with the drivers. Because these small programs function as a go-between and interact with both operating systems and other computer software programs, they have a tendency to be become corrupt.
When a device driver becomes corrupt, the item of hardware that they “drive” can start to behave erratically or stop responding completely. One very common problem that happens is when a printer driver gets corrupted. If your printer suddenly starts producing pages that are not formatted the way they appear on the screen, or print out nothing but sheets full of code, then the problem is most likely a bad software driver.
The good news is that it is very easy to replace a device driver that has gone bad. Most of the time on a PC running Microsoft Windows, such as Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can reinstall the driver from the CD-ROM that came with your device, as it will simply over-ride the defunct version.
However, before installing Mac drivers, it is recommended to completely remove all associated files from your pc before re-installing the newer version. If it has been awhile since you bought the device, then the best thing to do is go to the website of the manufacturer and search for the most recent version of the driver.
In many cases this is the easiest and fastest way to solve the problem with external hardware devices, but often overlooked solution. Sometimes when you install a new version of the device drivers, users will also find a better performance as a surprise bonus. Because of this, it is useful to establish a routine check with the manufacturer updated.

Trying to decide on a PDA? The first choice that you’ll have to make is whether to go with a Palm OS system or a Pocket PC (Windows CE) system:
- Palm systems run an operating system called “Palm OS”.
- Pocket PC systems run “Windows CE”. This looks and operates a lot like the more familiar versions of Microsoft Windows that you use on your desktop or laptop PC. Windows CE is not identical to the larger versions of Windows, and generally does not run the same software, but it does interoperate well with other Microsoft programs.
Some features are a dead heat between Palm systems and Pocket PCs:
- Both Palm systems and Pocket PCs can do contact management, calendaring and to-do-lists.
- Both Palm and Pocket PCs can do reasonable handwriting recognition. In either case, it can take a small amount of getting used to.
- Both Palm and Pocket PCs have models available with digital cameras.
- Some models of both Palm and Pocket PCs support music, multimedia and MP3 (MP3 is supported pretty much on all models). You’ll need to check the specs of individual models to see exactly what features they offer.
- Internet connectivity is available for most Palm and Pocket PCs.
Here are some reasons to choose Palm:
- Palm systems are usually cheaper. This is because Palm OS devices often have less memory and a slower processor. They can get away with this, without you noticing, because Palm OS is highly optimized to run on low-end hardware.
- Palm systems are often lighter and smaller than Pocket PCs. Of course, that isn’t always the case, so you need to check the specs on individual models when making comparisons.
- Palm systems, especially those with slower processors, often will run longer between battery recharges.
- Palm systems, are in our opinion, slightly easier to use. Pocket PCs use a cut-down version of the standard Windows interface, which while powerful, can offer too many confusing options.
- Palm systems have a simple and foolproof backup/restore feature which is triggered automatically whenever you sync to your main PC. Pocket PCs don’t automatically backup, so you need to remember to pick the option.
And here are some reasons to choose a Pocket PC:
- Pocket PCs integrate better with Microsoft Word and Excel. They can read your existing files, and it’s easy to transfer them across. Palm OS doesn’t have built-in support for Word or Excel, but there are third party programs available, at extra cost, that can do the job.
- Pocket PCs integrate with Microsoft Outlook. Again, for Palm systems you need extra software, although in some cases this extra software may be bundled with your Palm PDA.
- Pocket PCs often have a wider range of WiFi and other connectivity options. Of course, you’ll need to check the specs of the individual PDAs that you’re considering.
Conclusions:
Of course, your opinion may differ, but for what it’s worth, here’s how I’d decide:
- I would choose Palm if I wanted a simple low-end PDA.
- If I wanted more power and connectivity options, I’d look at both Palm and Pocket PC systems.
- If there was any special line-of-business software that I needed to run, and it was only available on one or the other of Palm OS and Windows CE (Pocket PC), of course that would dictate my choice.
- As always, I’d carefully check the specs of any individual machines that I was considerations. There are good (and some not so good) available models, Palm and PocketPC.

You’ve heard the booming bass as a car travels down the road. To capture this sound quality yourself, you need to construct a quality amp rack that brings the best of sound quality to your car. Usually an amp rack system begins in the trunk. This depends on the vehicle you drive, however. One man’s trunk can be another man’s truck bed. In some vehicles, the trunk is too minimal to even bother. You must choose a location that protects the components from outside elements while also allowing space for the system you desire.
A panel that can old all of the speaker components is placed in the a large enough space to allows the amplifiers, woofers, and other speaker systems to attach to this unit. Most people use an amp rack because it looks good. Sometimes, appearance does count. Custom upholstery and a variety of other features can turn an average amp rack into an awe inspiring artistic creation. In fact, there are car competitions for those with the prettiest amp rack.
If you have built a solid amp rack, you will find that the instillation is simple. It is all a matter of sliding the speaker components into place, wiring them up, and then hooking it all up to your stereo system. Leave a small opening in the back in case you have to rewire speakers or replace blown fuses. Make sure the openings are small, as appearance can make or break the value of your sound system. If you ever opt to resell, you can make plenty of money by having a solid and artistic amp rack.
Size does matter. You would be foolish to build an amp rack that is larger than your card can fit. Imagine purchasing all the components only to discover they will not fit. Measure repeatedly to ensure that your dream amp rack will work in the available space. Choose components that can fit into the space you have available. Also keep in mind the fact that you will most likely want to upgrade components over time.
Placement is everything. In a van, your sound system has plenty of room for growth. Average drivers do not have vans, though. For this reason, many drivers need to find a suitable location. Sedans are probably best equipped with the amp rack in the trunk. Corvettes, Trans Ams, GTOs, and Firebirds often have designated locations for an amp rack. In a truck, the amp rack should be placed in the narrow space behind the truck bench. In other trucks, you may need to place it beneath the seats. Given weather conditions, you should never place amplifier rack in the truck bed. Hatchback be complicated, but most can still houses a wonderful system.
Whether your ideal system has an amplifier system of your dreams.

How do you fix a DVD drive? This is a common search online by frustrated PC owners. For the drive to work properly, it is not only the drive but also the disc that has to be in working properly.
Before starting to fix the DVD problems, it is necessary to understand and know the cause of the problems. It could be a loose connector or a bad wire or even a mismatch between hardware and the software. The worst problem is the refusal of the ejection tray to come out or go in response to commands.
What if the disc has scratches? While ones commercially produced in large numbers can sometimes be replaced. However, exclusive or special ones that are made for special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, graduation ceremonies or special award ceremonies are irreplacable. Some of these rare and prized DVD have neither any backup nor replacement. That is why it’s so important to make sure that your drive and your entire PC is in perfect working order.
Can such problems be fixed? Normally a DVD player reads the metal layer that is covered at top by a plastic layer. However, if the plastic layer has scratches the laser cannot read the metal layer.
Another area of concern is the failure of some discs to run on your device. Many DVD players fail to play home burnt discs.
Sometimes merely rebooting or reinstalling the driver helps in rectifying some of the snags that occur from time to time. Cleaning the laser lens with easily available cleaner kits may be other solutions for fixing the DVD drive problems.
If your DVD drive is not working for any reason after you have tried simple solutions you have the option of having a computer technician visit your home and charge you up to $65.00 an hour or more. You can guarantee as far as computers are concerned that you will always have problems and you will always have to spend money maintaining them. That’s why I recommend that to learn to repair and maintain the PC itself. It is not cost thousands of dollars over the life of your equipment.
